With Hanukkah and Christmas just behind us, time to reflect on the gifts given and received. If Jewelry was a gift received this holiday season and all that glitters in gold, platinum or silver just isn’t making you want to sing with joy – the best advice for the recipient, the giver and the piece is: exchange it. Why, because the piece you’ll end up with is the piece you really want, and you can still say that the gift is from your…, fill in the dots, and the original piece that wasn’t a fit will have the chance to find its true happy wearer instead of languishing in a box at the back of a drawer or closet.

Here’s an exchange story that just happened – a client, who I helped earlier in the year with a Cartier watch wanted to get something really special for his wife this holiday and I know his wife, Kay really well – we both thought that the piece selected would be one that she would enjoy and wear happily – the item opened Christmas morning missed the mark totally! The photo on the left is a Henry Elfering lariat necklace – the gift given at Christmas and the photo on the right a Frederick Sage pendant, the piece Kay is exchanging for. Both are lovely pieces of jewelry but very different – now she’s happy and can still say her husband bought her an amazing holiday gift and is looking forward to having folks compliment her on an amazing pendant. And my client’s happy he gave a lovely piece of jewelry she’ll wear all the time. This is what wearing jewelry is all about in the end – having some one say, “that’s a gorgeous piece of jewelry your wearing.” Hearing that would surely put a lift in your step any day.
