Happy Birthday September – Sapphire is September’s birthstone. Its name comes from the Greek word sappheiros. Historically, sapphire symbolizes nobility, truth and faithfulness (why it is found in so many engagement rings and wedding bands). Sapphires have decorated the robes of royalty and clergy members for centuries -during the Medieval period the clergy wore sapphires to symbolize heaven, while others thought the gem attracted heavenly blessings. Sapphires association with royalty and romance was reinforced by the 1981 engagement of Lady Diana Spencer to Prince Charles and the 12 carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire ring made famous by Diana and event. Today we see the ring adorning the finger of “Kate” the Duchess of Cambridge.
Blue sapphires range from very light to very dark greenish or violetish blue. Sapphire is a variety of the gem species, corundum and occurs in all colors of the rainbow. Pink, purple, green, orange, or yellow corundum are known by their color (pink sapphire, green sapphire). Ruby is the red variety of corundum.
